As we have already discussed Umiam lake is located on a 15km distance which is not much of a big deal to travel from Shillong. So once you reach Shillong from there you can get a cab or auto which can be easily found there . Also the Umiam lake is very popular place to travel because it is the only place which offers houseboats in Shillong so you won't face any problem reaching there.

The calm and cool weather from November to June makes the trip to Umiam lake enjoyable. The weather and clear sky shows really beautiful views during these months so I suggest this time to travel to Umiam lake.

Legend of Umiam lake

Just like most of the tourist places Umiam lake also has a story. We call it the legend of Umiam lake.

Legend says that "once upon a time two sisters came down to earth from heaven to visit Meghalaya but a sad thing happened that one of the sisters went missing and the other sister cried so much that this lake was formed by her tears . In fact if you will ask someone to translate the word Umiam he or she will tell you that it means lake of tears.

Although it is a lake and we have mentioned houseboats which you can definitely do there and enjoy the beautiful views . trust me you will feel like heaven when you will visit this place. The whole tour to Umiam lake will be one of the greatest experiences in your life.
